Hope never goes away from us,

It doesn’t leave us,

It endures and waits.

Past

The Penitentiary for Minors and juveniles is situated in the North of Tichilesti, a place settled in the Danube’s meadow from Braila county. Access to the Penitentiary is on DJ 212 at 17 km from the city of Braila.

The Section Tichilesti of Braila Penitentiary was eshtablished in 1958, having as a goal the use of its prisoners for dyking the left bank of the Danube river.

In 1961 it became an Agricultural Farmstead MAI and in 1977 Section of Galati Penitentiary.

The Section turned into Special School for Work and Minors’ Reeducation in 1981 when housing offices for school, canteen, and workshops were built there.

School included class levels from I to X and from 1987 the XIth and the XIIth froms have been approved of functioning.

In 1988 the Special School for Work and Minors’ Reeducation was repealed, its housing offices being into custody of Braila’s Town Hall that assigned them to other destinations.

In 1991 it is set up again under the name of Centre of Reeducation Tichilesti.

It has been functioning since 2004 as Penitentiary for Minors and Juveniles.

Present

The penitentiary is structured in two functional parts:

An administrative zone including offices, officers’ mess, garage, sports grounds.

A holding space including school, workshops, prisoners’ canteen, sickroom, imprisonment sections and other auxiliaries.

The penitentiary has its own agricultural farmstead including a sheepfold, a pig farm, a dairy farm and 90 ha of land.

Future

Thinking of the future, the project of a new penitentiary building was achieved.

The working systems with prisoners and professional systems are also modernizing continuously. The system of computerized information of the prisoners and national computer network are implemented too by the help of the Phare Programmes.

The system of the prisoners’ escort and watch is also modernizing by fitting the video cameras informatically managed.

Government’s material efforts financing the most important part of the activity in this institution are related to the educational programmes which have as final goal social reinsertion of the prisoners.

Productive activities at Agricultural Farm are a daily routine

That is why these are teaching classes for those who do not know to read and write and school including class level from I to X.
